The Heavenly Honey Company of Ojai began with humble roots in 1979 when my dad, Bob Mearns, a passionate beekeeper, brought his first beehive home in the back of a 1965 Volkswagen Bug. Over the years, my dad expanded his hobby, and what started with just a few backyard hives soon grew to 1,500. Our family business evolved, bringing honey to the community under the name “Heavenly Honey Company.” My dad’s dedication to quality beekeeping and his dream of producing the best honey possible laid the foundation for what the company has become today. In 2008, after my dad passed away, we decided to continue our family’s honey tradition. Though we sold our bees to a trusted family friend, we remained in the honey business shifting our focus to bottling. We moved the company to Ojai and gave the brand a fresh look. While we had our own bees and were using our honey to fill our jars, we were also sourcing honey from our friends who had similar family owned and operated bee operations. This was necessary because our wholesale customer’s demands were greater than our honey production could keep up with. When we transitioned our focus to bottling, we began sourcing 100% of our honey from our beekeeper families who had been supplying us for decades. By maintaining close relationships with these beekeepers, we ensure that the honey is handled with the utmost care. We continue this care in our approach to bottling. We pour every drum (650 pounds) by hand from a gravity fed tank. This ensures the honey in each jar is made by only one beekeeper in one area of production at one point in time. We are capturing a moment in time represented by honey in every jar! This artisanal approach, while time-consuming, results in the highest quality honey—rich, flavorful, and true to its origins. In 2016, we opened our Honey Tasting Room in Downtown Ojai, inviting visitors to learn about and enjoy our unique honey. The tasting room is dedicated to honoring my dad’s legacy, offering a welcoming experience that embodies our family’s passion for honey. The tasting room provides an opportunity for guests to explore the different varieties of honey, each reflecting the weather, floral sources, and character of its origin—much like fine wine. The way the community and visitors to the Ojai Valley have embraced the tasting room has been heartwarming, and we work hard to ensure that every jar of honey continues to reflect our commitment to quality.
