About Deep Roots Market

we're deeply rooted in our community Deep Roots Market has grown organically out of the Greater Greensboro community since our founding in 1976. The Co-op, dedicated to service, is intertwined with the needs and goals of our member-owners, community members, shoppers and supporters. It all began as a small vegetarian buying club in the basement of a Guilford College dormitory in the 1960s. By 1976, ownership in the Co-op had grown enough to support a storefront business, and we were incorporated to become Deep Roots Co-operative. In 1990, the Co-op moved to a small building on Spring Garden Street, with our offices being housed in a rented trailer in the parking lot. From this location, we served the nutrition and wellness needs of Greensboro and the surrounding communities for 23 years. In March of 2013, we relocated to our beautiful new location in Downtown Greensboro at 600 North Eugene Street to continue to meet the needs of our growing member-owner base and community. Since that time, Deep Roots Market has flourished into the full-service grocery market and cafe so many people know and love today. And now, with almost 50 staff members and more than 5,500 member-owners, we've remained true to our roots as a 100% cooperatively owned, democratically governed, community driven organization, committed to doing business for good. And so, the story of Deep Roots Market truly is one rooted in community. Has our story inspired you? Why not help us write the next chapter? Considerbecoming a Co-op Owner, vote with your dollars, and support local businesses, farmers, and producers. Together our co-operative future is bright! Our current store (2013-present) located right alongside the Downtown Greenway at 600 N. Eugene St. between W. Smith St. and W. Fisher Ave. in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Co-op Living Tree Project, designed by Greensboro master sculptor Jim Gallucci, was a fundraising project. Proceeds from the sale of engraved leaves helped to fund improvement projects for the store following our move to our downtown location. The Co-op Living Tree represents the store’s history, and through its construction and materials, the spirit of community. Versions of an oak or other type of tree have appeared in the Deep Roots Market logo since our beginning. The oak symbolizes the co-op’s growth from a small buying club into a vital downtown presence. The Co-op Living Tree Project arose from a desire to incorporate Greensboro's vibrant creative arts community into our store, giving folks the opportunity to enjoy and interact with a local artist’s work. Long-time co-op owner and Greensboro master sculptor Jim Gallucci assembled the Co-op Living Tree to commemorate Deep Roots Market’s new growth and to unite the store with a significant part of Greensboro retail history. Gallucci used recycled and repurposed materials—including sections of stamped tin ceiling tiles salvaged from Greensboro’s last downtown grocery store, an A&P located at 221 Commerce Place that closed in 1973—to create the distinctive “bark” surface of the interior tree’s trunk. Gallucci’s inspired sculpture, and contributor’s leaves, unite past and present and root the cooperative in its new center-city home.
