About Blandford Nature Center Farm

At the Blandford Farm, we offer Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) – a relationship between community members who prefer locally-grown food and the farmers that grow it. CSA members support and invest in our farm by purchasing a “share” of the harvest that they can pick up weekly. Learn more about our 2026 CSA options and find links to register below! Vegetable Shares – Full and Half We have a limited number of opportunities available for intererested CSA Members to volunteer at the Blandford Farm in excchange for a discount on their vegetable share. The working share commitment involves helping out for 15 of the 20 CSA weeks for either 2 or 4 hours per week. A 2-hour per week commitment (30 hours total) will get a $100 discount on their share. A 4-hour per week commitment (60 hours total) will get a $200 discount. There are increased discounts for returning working shares. Working share tasks vary by day of the week and time of the year. Most likely tasks include weeding, pruning, trellising, mulching, seeding, potting, washing, or packing vegetables for market. Working shares are not guaranteed for all who are interested. If interested, please indicate this on your CSA registration and only pay for your $100 deposit at checkout. Our Farm Team will then be in touch to let you know if you have been approved for a working share. If selected, the balance of your total due will be adjusted to reflect your discount. If you receive a working share discount but are not able to fulfill your hours commitment through the season, you will see prorated funds reapplied to your account for the missing hours. Alternative CSA Share Pick-up Options One question we frequently get is what your options are if you miss a CSA share pick up day.  If you know in advance that you will be out of town for your CSA, there are a few options: We have very specific harvesting and packing numbers we operate from, based on the chosen CSA pick up in your registrations. If you decide you want to change your pick up and do not give us advanced notice, we will not have enough shares packed to accommodate that. We have a small crew that manages a lot of details and logistics on a daily and weekly basis in order to keep production going smoothly on the farm. In the past, when we have tried to accommodate last minute alternate pick up requests, we’ve noticed that harvest and packing details get lost in the shuffle if our team doesn’t have a clear plan going into the week. This has made the advance notice a necessary step so that we can provide the best possible pick up experience. Please use this option sparingly, as logistics get intense very quickly when we try to accommodate multiple requests of this nature at the same time. If you pay for your share online, you will automatically be directed to several payment plan options through our system. If you pay for your share with a physical sign up form, you are able to pay for your share by check, card, or cash.  These payments can be accepted at the visitor center, farm, or farmers market.  If you are mailing a check to pay for your share, please email the farm manager atlaurenh@blandfordnaturecenter.org, so she is aware to keep an eye out for your payment.  Additionally, please feel free to email Lauren with any other payment questions you may have. Prefer a physical CSA registration form or want to avoid the convenience fee? Download a printable formhere, or pick one up from the Mary Jane Dockeray Visitor Center on your next visit (Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm). If you have questions or would like to know more about the Blandford Farm, please contact Lauren, our Farm Manager, atlaurenh@blandfordnaturecenter.orgor 616-735-6240 ext. 125. Blandford is a drop off location for Wormies’community composting service.  Registrations will be through Wormies’ website. This service costs $14/month. Wormies will provide folks with a bucket if they need one. They can opt to receive a share of the finished compost.

Innovation: Using creativity and curiosity to continuously improve. Educate. Engage. Empower. We let visitors get their hands dirty. We are a501(c)(3) non-profitwhose job and passion is to invite our community to enjoy, explore, and learn in nature.  This is accomplished through an active outdoor environmental lab, a team of passionate, knowledgeable people and a strong link from past to future promoting sustainability. Blandford offers a wide variety of experiences to support our mission and vision through dynamic partnerships and innovative programming for all ages. The place now known as Blandford Nature Center began as Collins Woods, part of the Collins family farm. It was the place Dr. Mary Jane Dockeray explored as a child and nurtured her love of the outdoors. In time, Victor Blandford purchased the farm from the Collins family and began to sell it off as lots. In 1949, Mary Jane began working for the Grand Rapids Public Museum as a nature lecturer. Eventually, Mary Jane convinced the Blandford family to donate 17 acres to the museum for the development of a nature center, and she became the curator. In 1965, the Museum Association helped seek the funds necessary for building a visitor center, which opened in 1968. Over time, Mary Jane found state dollars to purchase more land, bringing the Grand Rapids city-owned land to a current total of 264 acres with our recent acquisition of the former Highlands golf course with the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. In 2003, Blandford seceded from the Grand Rapids Public Museum and entered its early years. It was managed by Grand Rapids Public Schools for four years and in 2007, merged with Mixed Greens. In 2009, the Wege Foundation provided five years of funding for an Executive Director to stabilize the organization and rebuild it as an asset for the community. Blandford Nature Center has been a thriving independent, charitable501(c)(3) nonprofitever since. Remembering Mary Jane It is with profound sadness that we share that our beloved founder, Dr. Mary Jane Dockeray, has passed away peacefully at the age of 93. “Mary Jane was a local icon in our community,” said Bill Faber, Board Chair of Blandford Nature Center. “The world was changed through her work not only because she preserved over 143 acres of habitat in the City of Grand Rapids, but because she inspired so many children and adults to fall in love with nature and do their part to protect nature too.” She was a leader in environmental education. After graduating from Michigan State College with degrees in geology and environmental education, she worked as the Curator of Natural History at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. She visited schools, educating students about natural sciences and the environment. She authored the book “Let’s Go Exploring: Suggestions for Field Trips and Associated Studies in Environmental-Conservation Education.” Dockeray also wrote and produced a film titled “These Things Are Ours” viewed throughout the United States and Canada as part of lecture tours for the National Audubon Society. The creation of Blandford Nature Center and the Blandford Environmental Education Program were spearheaded by Mary Jane. The Center now encompasses 264 acres of diverse habitats, an interpretive center, farm demonstrations and several historic buildings. It was a lifetime dream to acquire the addition of the Highlands Golf Course
